Google Web Search - What You Need to Know About Google Search

Most people had their first contact with Google here. For many therefore, Google is no more than a search engine.

When you visit the Google Home page (www.google.com), the first thing that confronts you is the search field. So, it might not be wrong to regard Google to be, first and foremost, a search engine. That's where Google started.

Conducting keyword searches on the Google Home Page has become a global culture. For millions accross the world, once you have need for knowledge, you 'ask Google'. Thus, such expressions as 'Google it' have found their way into common diction in daily use around
the world.

All you do is to enter the set of words that express your query and click on 'Google search' below the search field and you soon see a list of search results. Google displays the list based on a pre-determined algorithm in agreement to the keywords you in-putted. It therefore means that if you have a little knowledge of how the algorithm works, you are going to get more satisfying results with your searches.

Here are a few points that may help you in conducting better searches on the Google Home Page:
i. If you want to be specific about your keyword, enclose the keyword with apostrophes (quotation marks). Eg. 'Larry Page and Sergey Brin'. This will make the Google Search Engine proceed to get pages that contain the exact keywords in the order in which you entered it. If you rather need a broader view of the subject in question, this option may not be the best for you.
ii. If you want only the pages that define the subject in question, you suffix your keyword with a question mark. Eg. 'Google Bookmarks?'
iii. If you want to fetch every page on a particular website, you enter the site name and prefix it with 'site:'. Eg. site:google.com
iv. If you want to fetch a site that contains a particular string of keywords, you prefix that keyword with 'site:'. Eg. site: founder of Google.

For more refined searches, you might want to use Google Advanced Search.
